The Military World Games are a multisports event organised every four years, one year before the year the Olympic Games are organised. It is an event that is based on the CISM and Olympic spirit, without political, religious and racial consideration nor discrimination. Furthermore it must be organised in a dignified manner. In 1995, CISM decides to break its tradition of organising every year fifteen to twenty world championship per year by gathering all its member nations during its first Military World Games in Rome from 4 to 16th September 1995. These first Games took place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of the second World War and of the ratification of the United nations Organisation Charter. By organising those Games, CISM has launched the most explicit and spectacular message of peace to the whole world. There is indeed no better meaningful and beautiful message of peace than the one sent to the world by the representatives of more than one hundred Armed forces. Those who had seemed to be forever divided by ideological and political barriers came together under the CISM flag in the name of friendship.

After the tremendous success of the 1st edition, the Board of Directors of CISM decided to repeat this idea and to organise this major event every four years, one year before the Olympic Games. Four years later in Zagreb, from the 8th to the 17th August 1999, 6734 participants coming from 82 countries have contributed to the great success of the 2nd MWG. The 3rd edition was held in Catania, Sicile (Italy), December 2003.

CISM entrusts the organisation of the Games to a city, a region, or Country. The Games always remain under the aegis of CISM but are managed by a CISM and the bidding city. It is understood that a bidding city is empowered to take all necessary steps to organise the games and must work in close cooperation with, amongst others, the Nations Armed Forces, the National Olympic Committee and the National Sports Federations. The responsibility to organise the Military World Games can, in principle only be granted to countries which are members or invited to become member of CISM.

The CISM member delegation must be represented on the Bidding City Organising Committee. A bidding city must thus have the support of the Armed Forces through the national CISM delegation. The candidature dossier therefore has to be presented to CISM by the authorities of the city and the responsible representative of the Armed forces. CISM is the authority which issues the guidelines and resolves problems of a general sense. The role of the Host City should be that of an executor. A manual for organisations bidding for the MWG is available, upon request, at the General Secretariat in Brussels.
